 Bringing Hope to the Table

For 1 in 6 people across our country, hunger is a reality.

37 million Americans don't know where they will get their next meal.
14 million of them are children.
3 million of them are senior citizens.
36% of these households have one or more working adults.
48% of these households are in rural and suburban areas.

More families than ever are turning to local food banks and hunger agencies for help.

Kroger is a founding partner of Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization.

For more than 30 years, we have assisted Feeding America in its mission to help feed our nation's hungry through a nationwide network of local food banks and to engage our communities in the fight to end hunger.

Local food banks know they can count on the Kroger family of stores to provide assistance when it's needed most.

Our support takes many forms.

Food

More than 65 million pounds of food was donated to local food banks by the Kroger family of stores in 2010, the equivalent of more than 50 million meals.

Nearly two-thirds of that was fresh meat, dairy items, fruits, vegetables and bakery products. Paired with traditional donations of dry beans, pasta, canned vegetables and other pantry staples, this fresh food allows food banks to provide quality, not just quantity, to local families.

Funds

Bringing Hope to the Table, our annual cause marketing promotion that happens in stores in early summer, generates $3 million in cash - to fund food bank operations - and $1.5 million in product - to stock food bank shelves.

Grants from The Kroger Co. Foundation support building campaigns and other projects that allow local food banks to expand and serve more people.

Our more than 2,400 stores across the country provide customers a variety of ways throughout the year to lend a hand. Whether dropping spare change into specially-marked coin canisters; purchasing nonperishable food for in-store food drives; or adding a small donation to your local food bank to your bill, it all adds up to a shared goal, neighbors helping neighbors. Together, these small donations add up to a big difference for local families. During the critical holiday season in 2010, our shoppers provided more than $5.3 million in food and funds to local hunger relief efforts.

Time

Our associates help bring our commitment to fighting hunger to life in the hundreds of communities where they live and work.

Across our family of stores, Kroger managers serve on the boards of local food banks, providing guidance on food safety, logistics, facility operations and fundraising.

And associates provide thousands of hours of volunteer service, sorting product donations, packing emergency food back packs for children, distributing food at outreach events.
